BRAND BOYCOTT: Netflix’s “Dear White People” Series Sparks Controversy, Netflix Boycott

Netflix’s “Dear White People” Series Sparks Controversy, Netflix Boycott

Is anyone surprised by this?
Among the many show announcements Netflix made yesterday was their TV series adaptation of the independent film Dear White People. While the trailer’s subject matter (is it okay for white people to dress in blackface?) seems pretty straightforward and uncontroversial (of course not), many people were still furious that the show even existed. In a similar move to the #DeleteUber campaign, many people began to support a movement to boycott Netflix.
For every controversy there’s an equal backlash, so for all the people criticizing the streaming service there were an equal number supporting the show’s premise and Netflix. The entire discussion was as partisan and racial as possible, with one side using the hashtag #WhiteGenocide and the other referencing the now-common “white tears.”
We recommend holding judgement until actually seeing the show, but since this is the internet here are a bunch of people with fully-formed opinions based on a 35-second trailer. Watch it here and let us know what you think. The show releases on April 28. The trailer currently has over 100,000 dislikes on YouTube to only 7,000 likes.

BLACK HISTORY: Black History Month: Through The Lens Of The Internet

Black History Month: Through The Lens Of The Internet

Barack Obama, Rihanna and more begin the celebration of Black History Month.

Black History Month yields a number of things for the masses. There often are a myriad of capsule collections and sneaker packs paying tribute to the month like Nas' new capsule for a cause or Nike and Jordan brand's 2017 "Black History Month" collection. More importantly though, Black History month provides a time frame for people of all demographics to celebrate the rich history of African Americans, in addition to providing a template to constructively discuss American history, race relations and unify because of that discussion.
On the first day of Black History Month 2017, people all over the world have taken to social media to express their heartfelt messages and honor the deep heritage this month represents. We have gathered a number of noteworthy posts from people celebrating in hopes to share the love and pay our respects to the leaders and people before us who made Black History Month possible.

NEWS: Russell Simmons On Whether He’s Still Friends With Trump: “Not Anymore”

Russell Simmons On Whether He’s Still Friends With Trump: “Not Anymore”

Simmons also revealed he used to spend “every weekend” with The Donald.

Two Queens natives who became wildly successful business men have parted ways. Russell Simmons told the New York Daily News earlier this week that he could no longer consider Donald Trump a friend, despite the long history the two have shared.
At the charity gala in midtown Manhattan, Simmons recalled the time the two used to spend together. He said they used to spend “every weekend” together at Trump’s Florida Mar-a-lago resort back in the day, and even went with Trump on his first date with now-First Lady Melania Trump. The current president also wrote the foreword for Simmons’ first two books. Asked if the two were still friends, Simmons said, “Not anymore.”
Asked if the two were The falling out was inevitable, but the turning point in their friendship came after a 2015 video interview in which Simmons declared, “I’d rather Kim Kardashian be President.” Apparently Trump called Simmons' office afterwars to talk to him but the Def Jam founder refused to take the call, instead instructing his assistant to tell Trump to Google the interview if he had any questions about the statement.
Simmons now plans to lead a “resistance” against Trump’s anti-immigrant agenda. Such a relatable problem – when you can no longer be friends with someone because they’re running for President. Do you think Simmons and Trump ever bump “Real Friends” and reminisce about their past together?

BREAKING NEWS: Trayvon Martin's Parents Are Thinking About Running For Public Office

Trayvon Martin's Parents Are Thinking About Running For Public Office

Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin are not satisfied with the state of things.

Next month marks the 5th anniversary of the day Trayvon Martin was shot and killed in Florida. While the nation has since experienced a number other police shootings, Martin’s remains in people’s minds as one of the first in the modern era of heightened awareness about police (and citizen) violence against black Americans. The five years hasn’t softened the hearts of Martin’s parents, who revealed they are now considering running for public office to “be part of the change” in the United States.
In an interview with USA Today, Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin (they are divorced) reveal how their perspective has radically changed since that fateful evening in February in 2012. Where before they were comfortable with their “average” lives, they now want to help push progress that they both feel hasn’t been made since their son’s death.
“The only way we can be part of the change is if we start with local government and we work our way up,” explains Fulton. They also cite Trump’s recent election as additional motivation to begin working in politics. If they decided to pull the trigger on a political bid, they hope to eventually make it to the national stage.
Trayvon Martin would have been 22 years old next Sunday.
